25 Great Summer Adventures
in Northern NH

by Wayne King

Summer is a great time to really explore New Hampshire. Here's a short list of 25 great summer adventures in northern NH. Live large, breath deeply, shout, laugh, play. Even if it means making a long trip, we think every single one of them is worth it.

1. Work on perfecting your cannonball at Newfound Lake in Hebron and Bristol.
2. Take lunch at the Woodstock Inn and Brewery in North Woodstock. Try one of their award winning Bloody Marys (or a virgin bloody mary) or try one of their excellent craft brews.
3. Take the leap at Mt. Agassiz Basin (aka Indian Leap) in North Woodstock.
4. Try the corn at the Longview Farm in Plymouth, NH. We think it's some of the best on planet earth.
5. Take a picture of your feet on either side of the US/Canadian Border along the Fourth Connecticut Lake Trail.
6. Try deer venison jerky and watch the Red Deer at Bonnie Brae Farm in Plymouth.
7. Walk Main Street or the River Walk in Littleton and drop in at some of the most interesting shops in New Hampshire including the longest candy counter in the world at Chutters Candy Shoppe, or the The Little Village Toy and Book Shop, or the Littleton Library and its statue of Pollyanna and more.
8. Ride the 25' natural slide over the falls at Franconia Falls in Lincoln, NH.
9. Take a picnic to Beede Falls in Sandwich and do some swimming and exploring.
10. Stick your head out of the window of the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway as it races to the summit of Cannon.
11. Drive Moose Alley (Rte 3) in Pittsburg at dusk - verrry slowly please! (Also see this!)
12. Attend an Ecumenical Chapel service at St. John of the Mountains Chapel in Ellsworth.
13. Explore Mount Washington and end your day by order a Strawberry Daiquiri at dusk on the deck of the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods.
14. Paddle to and camp at the Moll's Rock Camping site on Lake Umbagog.
15. Hike the Mahoosuc Range from Gorham to Old Speck Mountain in Maine (4-5 days) or just take a day hike into the magical mysteries of Mahoosuc Notch.
16. Pick a very hot day and air condition your outdoors experience by winding your way deep into the Lost River Gorge at Lost River Reservation in North Woodstock.
17. Try the Zipline Adventure from Alpine Adventures in Lincoln, NH.
18. Buy your dinner fresh from a farmer's market. New Hampshire has many farmer's markets and they are a source of wonderful fresh produce as well as interesting meats and herbs all harvested locally.
19. Hike the Caps Ridge Trail up Mt. Jefferson on a sunny day.
20. Nuzzle your nose into the softness of your chosen steed and then mount up and go for a horseback trail ride at Rocky River Ranch in Campton.
21. Try your hand - ok, your mouth and hand - at the annual "Moose Calling" competition at the annual Moose Festival in the Great North Woods.
22. Enjoy a self-guided nature walk through one of NH's most amazing natural wonders, the Flume Gorge. Start with a visit to the information center and watch the short video to get your juices flowing for the adventure. Along the walk you will pass through a covered bridge, see the spectacular flume cascade as you walk the boardwalk through the gorge.
23. Visit the Quincy Bog Natural Area in Rumney. Take a self-guided walk at dusk and watch and listen to the bog come to life.
24. Shop 'till you drop on Main Street in North Conway.
25. August is the month to take in an Old Home Day celebration in almost any New Hampshire community. It's a slice of Americana you'll be glad you made the effort to find. Pig out at the Pig Roast or go stargazing by canoe in the middle of Loon Lake at the annual Freedom Old Home Week. Watch the Baker Valley Cloggers do their dancin' thing at the Rumney Old Home Day celebration; try the chili cook off or home brew contest at the Enfield celebration. Wherever you are on any given weekend in August you can surely find fellowship and fun at an Old Home Day.
