Opera North Receives Prestigious Grant

Opera company receives an Opera America 2018 Innovation Grant.

LEBANON, NH - Opera North is honored to be chosen as a recipient of Opera America's 2018 Innovation Grant. The grant will support Opera North's work with the National Park Service to develop the historic Blow-Me-Down Farm in Cornish, New Hampshire into a new national destination for arts and culture.

Opera North is one of twenty recipients of this year's grant, chosen from a competitive field of submissions by 48 American and Canadian professional opera companies. Launched in Fall 2016, Opera North chosen as an Opera America 2018 Innovation Grant recipient. Opera America's Innovation Grants is funded through the generosity of the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation to support artistic vitality, audience experience, organizational effectiveness and community connections.

The grant will help fund the development of compelling programming and experiences for all audiences at Blow-Me-Down Farm as part of Opera North's strategy to broaden its reach.

"We are thrilled and appreciative of Opera America for recognizing the exciting potential of our plans to create a destination for the arts at Blow-Me-Down Farm," said Evans Haile, General Director for Opera North. "We believe presenting the performing and visual arts in a natural setting will create a welcoming haven for everyone."

Blow-Me-Down Farm was the historic home of Charles C. Beaman, a New York City lawyer who was responsible for bringing Augustus Saint-Gaudens and many others to Cornish, New Hampshire. The result was the Cornish Colony, an extraordinary group of visual artists, writers, architects, landscape designers, musicians, and others who lived and worked in Cornish and nearby Plainfield from 1885 until 1935. The group included such notable people as Maxfield Parrish, Ethel Barrymore, Percy Mackaye, Ellen Shipman, Paul Manship, Charles Adams Platt, and novelist Winston Churchill.

Opera North's first season at Blow-Me-Down Farm begins with an innovative new production - Singers & Swingers - that combines Opera North resident artists and orchestra with professional circus artists, under the direction of Mark Lonergan of The Big Apple Circus. Singers & Swingers will have four performances over the weekend of July 13 - 15, 2018.

In addition, Opera North's Summerfest 2018 will feature two mainstage productions - Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann and Rossini's Barber of Seville - at Lebanon Opera House, from August 3 - 14. The season will also include a number of concerts at landmark locations around the region.
